sunday afternoon, caryn and i went indoor rock climbing w/ my brother. i’ve gone once before, but this was caryn’s first time. i hate heights. like a lot. like sooo much. rock climbing is really not the sport for me. most of the time, once i’d get halfway up, i’d start getting pretty freaked out and would wish that i had never gone climbing. but then i’d finish the climb and get all excited about being able to do it. i guess i’m glad i actually push myself to do things like this that i’m naturally very afraid of. it always ends up being worthwhile in the end. unlike me, caryn was not a wus at all… she totally loved it. she did hella good for her first time and is already totally amped to go try it again.

You reminded me of the time I went rapelling in Israel when I was 16. It was down a dry waterfall run of four separate rapelling sites, so you couldn’t exactly cop out in the middle and decide not to do it. I don’t know if you’ve ever rapelled, but basically they make you walk backwards over the edge of a cliff (while hooked into highly-reliable equipment, of course), and then you literally walk down the cliff with your body parallel to the ground. I remember the first one, I was so fucking scared, literally crying. But once you got over the edge it was so exhilarating and fun. It’s all about getting over your initial fear.

i went rapelling once wheni was a little kid. it was hellza fun, but pretty scray too. i think i’d be down to try it again. maybe when i go on my RTW trip, i’ll do it…. for some reason going down instead of up seems less scary a little.

Hehe, yeah, cos at least when you’re done you don’t have to worry about finding a means to get back down.
